In her workshops, Cherryl encourages the use of certain guidelines in responding to new writing. New writing is sensitive and tender and is easily damaged by negative judgments. The intention of the guidelines is to create a safe, confidential and sacred space in which to write.
1. Honor the writer by listening carefully.
2. Assume all work is fictional
Assume that all work is fictional unless the writer volunteers that it is autobiographical. Even if the writer is moved to tears as she or he reads, respond to the written work by saying "The narrator"... rather than "You...." or "Your..."
3. As participants, we are invited to respond only with what we like, what stays with us, what moves us not with how to make the writing stronger.
4. Stick to the writing, avoiding our own anecdotes and asides.
5. As writers, we are free to do what we want; we are free to accept or reject the exercises that are offered and to accept or reject any comments that are offered.
These guidelines as well as a full description of this writing method are in Pat's book, The Writer as an Artist: A New Approach to Writing Alone and with Others. If you want to buy a copy, go to www.amherstwriters.com.
